It’s an interesting story about the “Legend of Nacho Suave.” It is a little known fact that a young and handsome man named Nacho was the inspiration for the “Tequila Reef Cantina and Restaurant” (038-414-035) on Soi 7, just 30 meters from Beach Road.
Nacho spent his early years as a cliff diver in Acapulco, until he hit his head while doing a Timex commercial. (It takes a licking and keeps on ticking!) After this tragedy and the ensuing fear of heights, he took up surfing and went on to win the Gold Metal for Surfing in the 1969 Olympics.
With his fame and success came many endorsement deals and he made a tidy sum of money. He spent the ‘70s and ‘80s chasing the perfect wave and winning surf competitions. He was well known in the international world surfing community. There was a Life Magazine cover story about him. It has been suggested that the great surf movie called “The “Endless Summer” was based on his surfing exploits and adventures.
In the 1990s he has been credited with starting the Dot Com phenomenon with his www.sombro.com. He made a bundle and went on to become a world authority on Margaritas and Martinis. Wanting to settle down, he bought one of the best secret surf spots in Mexico called it, “Tequila Reef” and he developed it into the jet-set resort as it is today. Many of his close personal friends include Henry Kissinger, Keith Richards and Robert Vaughn and others. They helped to make his resort internationally famous and Nacho became a rich man.
Nacho is gone now but it is said that to many he reappears after their 10th Margarita. For the best Margaritas in town head over to “Tequila Reef”, Soi 7 and who knows maybe you too will see Nacho. It is “Way Bueno!” Shoo-ah!
