Thailand’s medical services will be overhauled in the next five years, under a Public Health Ministry plan.
The best-equipped hospitals would be developed into “centers of excellence.” Treating patients with heart disease and cancer, as well as trauma cases.
State hospitals run by different agencies would share their resources to avoid expensive purchases.
Centers would be classified based on their specialization in primary, secondary and tertiary (third) care.
Health Department Director General Narongsakdi Aungkasuvapala said the plan would relieve overcrowding at popular hospitals such as Chulalongkorn and Siriraj, allowing more time for research and development.
Cardiac centers would be split into five levels, with Chulalongkorn and Siriraj providing the most advanced technology for heart patients. Another 31 hospitals would provide differing levels of expertise in 25 provinces, including Bangkok.
Cancer centers would be divided into three levels, with those in the top level providing all forms of care, as well as conducting research and development on new treatments.
The top 10 cancer centers would be based in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Khon Kaen. The rest would be based in 18 hospitals across 11 provinces, including Bangkok.
Trauma centers would be split into two levels, with the best providing comprehensive care, as well as training specialist doctors. These would be based in eight hospitals in Bangkok, Khon Kaen, Chiang Mai and Songkhla.
Other trauma centers would be based at 20 hospitals in 18 provinces, including two in Bangkok.
The plan is before the National Economic and Social Development Board and Budget Bureau, who will send it to cabinet when they are finished.
Take care of yourself. Have a plan, in case you have a health problem while in Thailand. Maybe, buy health insurance to pay for unexpected large health problems and the huge bills that follow. Develop a plan to get to a hospital quickly. Carry copies of your passport and visa and any medical insurance ID cards you have in Thailand or another country. If you are unconscious in a Hospital and they can’t find any information that you have a way to pay for the medical bills, you might have to wait for medical services or you might not get any medical help until the hospital knows that you can afford to pay for the bills.
