They are inconspicuous because they look like regular cell phones. You can snap pictures as discreetly as any spy and, with the push of a few buttons, pop them into an e-mail or upload them to the Web in less than a minute. No wires or computer hookups necessary.
There’s a problem. Because camera phones are inconspicuous, they are being banned in bookstores, gyms, health clubs and spas, corporate headquarters, go go clubs or anywhere where photography is banned. Some people try to take pictures of your credit card as you are standing in line at the cash register at a store and then they try to use your credit card to buy stuff.
Most people use their camera phones for impromptu pictures of friends, family, vacations etc etc etc. But they have also been used to snap pictures of celebrities at private parties, copy recipes from cookbooks at bookstores and even document crimes in progress. In Italy, police nabbed two robbers after a shop owner snapped their pictures and e-mailed them to authorities. In Britain, what looked like a rape in progress at a pub was caught on camera phone. And in Osaka, Japan, police set up an e-mail address that citizens can use to submit shots of suspicious activities.
It is estimated that 80 million camera phones have been sold worldwide as of the end of the year 2003.
Samsung camera phone has a screen that swivels and Samsung has a service center in Pattaya. Motorola’s V810 has a have a built-in flash. The Nokia 3650 was the first video cell phone. Some PDAs, like Hitachi have phone cams. The camera on the Sony Ericsson phone is hidden on the back.
