Greetings and Salutations, World traveler, If you read this, I know that you are a world traveler, an adventurer, and a person who is willing to try something new and different. You are all of these things because you are in Thailand and out of your own country. You are not complacent. You are more intelligent . . . maybe. You are willing to try new things and to experience the pleasures of the world. OK, world traveler. Be brave now. Read these words and contemplate the new and different . . . . Do you like peanuts? Do you like butter? Do you like salad dressing? If you answered yes to any of these questions then you will love the taste of a uniquely Thai dish called, . . . wait for it, . . . Bugs. Calm down. Don’t jump to conclusions. Think about this. There are millions of people living in Asia and they eat these little culinary delights. Why? It’s because some crickets taste like potato chips. Bet you can’t eat just one. Yup, my friend, once you find the little black cricket that tastes like potato chips you will find yourself munching them like potato chips. Don’t be greedy. Share them with your Thai friend. Eat them one at a time and not by the handful. I know, I know, I know, you are probably sitting there squirming in your seat and wondering, “Is this guy nuts?” No, I’m not nuts. I’ve had the pleasure of discovering the culinary delights of eating bugs, grubs, scorpions and other culinary delights. Set your mind. Step up to the table. Sit down. Be determined. Be brave. Have a beer handy. Have your Thai friend pick up the bug. Don’t smell it. Don’t look at it. Tilt your head back. Open your mouth. Stick out your tongue. Have them place one bug on your tongue. Close your mouth. Straighten your head back down. Look forward and eat it quickly. Notice the potato chip taste. Next, either take a swig of beer to wash it down or most likely, it will taste so good that you will say, “Umm! and want another bug. Believe it, or don’t. Ha ha ha ha ha ha! Another small thing that you need to know is that you need a Thai friend to teach you “how” to eat some of these culinary delights. For example, you only eat certain parts of the scorpion and the grasshoppers. Live, love and laugh. Live long and prosper.
