It appears that many people, who are not lawyers but who are passing themselves off as lawyers, have sneakily opened law offices, which give inappropriate consultations to clients and damage the image of the entire legal profession. The clients can neither make claims nor do anything after these bogus legal offices have made legal mistakes from their incompetent consultations.
The Law Society of Thailand seeks to control the formation of law offices, so that it can regulate and make them function properly. Embassies and official departments can also conveniently check up on any law office when it gives legal service to foreigners. Moreover, it would improve the reputation of qualified lawyers worldwide.
To sum up, lawyers must register their offices at the Law Society of Thailand beginning October 1st, 2003. A condition to register is that the applicant must solely be a lawyer. In the case of a juristic person, the applicant must either be the managing partner or the managing director. The Law Society of Thailand will then give a registered number to the applicant to be displayed at his/her office. Any law office that has no registered number will be considered as an unqualified law office.
