The Thai man has returned from Europe. His name is Khun Chumphol Phunpima. His studio is in Jomtien at Chateau Dale. He has been living and studying in Europe under the guidance of the high fashion courtier houses of Coco Channel of Paris, Givanchi, Valentino and other well-known fashion designers.
He spent 5 years in formal training and than 15 years studying at the courtier houses in Amsterdam with a lady who was from the courtier house of Coco Channel of Paris, France. He is the man who reintroduced Thai silk to Europe and the fashion houses are all very grateful for a new material to work with to produce all sorts of fashion items. He has produced hats, capes and shawls, dresses, skirts, blouses and slacks that are all made with Thai silk.
He told me that a person has to study the history of fashion in order to understand what is possible. He has studied the fashion designs of the Europeans from 1800 and 1900 up through the present day designers. He has learned so much. He knows what looks good. He studies his clients body form and shape. For example, if a person has a short body, than they will not look good in some styles that taper in the waist. Also, heavy people do not look good in very tight clothes. At least that is what I understood. I might be wrong.
What he does for his clients is, after studying there body form and shape, he discusses with the clients their wants, desires and needs. He than sketches a minimum of 5 designs for each item. He than has the client pick and choose from the designs. Than he and the client pick out the materials. He says that attention to detail is very important to him even down the buttons and the thread. The client is educated and given a choice. With him it’s, fit, body form, shape and pattern. His work is exclusion. He makes no copies. He will not copy cloths off the rack.
His clients will fly to Thailand from around the world and than fly back for fittings and picking and choosing and working out the details. The client flies onto the next country and the clothes are shipped to them wherever in the world they are at the time. His clients include the Royalty of the world, the rich and famous, the movie and television stars and the political types. All these people need and must have clothes to wear to the exclusion parties, presentations or gatherings of the upper one percent. You’ve seen them on TV. The summits, the awards and the charity parties are the places that you might catch a glimpse of them on TV or in the magazines and newspapers.
